Upon graduation from Faribault High School in 1987, Janna moved to Southern California to begin her post-high school career and life. While in California, she worked in hospitality and property management, married, and raised three children. After conversations with her grandmother, Jannette Fritz, about a business opportunity in Faribault, Janna moved back in 1995 to reopen the former CJ’s – to what would become Bernie’s Grill. She and her former husband Bernie owned and operated it for 25 years. In 1998 they moved Bernie’s Grill into the old Elk’s building at 129 Central Avenue. She also created the Vintage Ballroom & Suites, operating from 2005 to 2018, where she hosted over 350 weddings. During COVID, Bernie’s closed, and she pivoted by opening Janna’s Market Grill which she owns and operates today, employing a staff of 20.
Janna has a special interest in supporting downtown Faribault. In addition to Janna’s Market Grill, the building has eight residential units, including apartments and extended stays. She also purchased and restored two additional downtown buildings and opened a lady’s boutique, Finally A Gift Store, which she ran for many years.
Janna has a passion for her community. She served two terms on the Faribault City Council from 2015 to 2023. Her community involvement includes Faribault Hockey Board, Chamber of Commerce, Community Kitchen where she consults and plans meals every Tuesday serving 150 people. Recently, she has been a leading advocate for “Viaduct Park” which she helped to create. Janna was a Finalist for the Small Business of the Year Award by the Faribault Chamber of Commerce. Bernie’s Grill was also recognized for many years as the Best Breakfast in Town by the Faribault Daily News.
Janna recalls that school was challenging, but she had several teachers who inspired her and helped her succeed. She remembers that Shirley Norgaard, her 4th grade teacher, was supportive and kind, and Harvey Schuldt (high school) held her accountable.
Janna has three children and is married to Brett Reese. They live on their 40-acre ranch with horses and cattle.
